Yuyan is a robatayaki restaurant located in the top floor of Shanghai Henglong Shopping Center. The challenge was to formulate a interior that is modern yet invoke the traditional Japanese robatayaki restaurant. A motif based on traditional Japanese screens was desgined and used throughout the space both as a facade and also a partition. Lighting was modulated and paired with dark and muted materials such a hot rolled steel and concrete while brass and gold accents highlights the dining spcae. Modern Shanghai firecode do not allow open flame in the building so extensive redesign of the robata grill will required.
